Jal Jeevan Mission: 80% Tap Water Milestone
Jal Jeevan Mission Achieves 80% Tap Water Coverage
Why in the News ?
The Ministry of Jal Shakti announced that over 15.71 crore rural households now have tap water connections under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), achieving 80% national coverage. This marks a major step toward sustainable and inclusive rural water accessibility, contributing to India’s progress on sustainable development goals and clean energy transition, while also opening opportunities for critical minerals investment in the water sector.
Progress Under Jal Jeevan Mission:
- Over 15.71 crore rural households have been provided tap water connections, covering more than 80% of rural India.
- The Mission focuses not only on coverage but also on sustainability, functionality, and reliable service delivery, enhancing climate resilience in rural communities and supporting the development of clean energy technologies, including energy storage systems and battery manufacturing.
- It has emerged as one of the flagship programs of the government under the vision of Har Ghar Jal, aligning with broader decarbonisation targets and the exploration of rare earth elements for sustainable technologies.
- The initiative prioritizes quality water supply, source sustainability, and community participation for effective management, contributing to overall energy security in rural areas and paving the way for renewable energy projects, including solar thermal power installations.
- States and Union Territories are working toward achieving 100% coverage in the coming years, aligning with the clean energy transition goals and fostering a renewable energy partnership across regions, which may involve improvements in transmission infrastructure.
Strengthening District-Level Governance:
- The Ministry of Jal Shakti organized the first District Collectors Peyjal Samvad in New Delhi, showcasing the government’s commitment to a clean energy future and exploring potential for critical minerals processing in water treatment.
- This platform aims to strengthen district-led governance and promote peer learning among districts implementing JJM, while also considering the integration of distributed energy resources and solar thermal power technologies.
- District Collectors play a crucial role as the link between policy and people, ensuring proper implementation of both water accessibility and clean energy initiatives, including the development of energy storage systems.
- The Samvad also encourages innovation, cross-sharing of best practices, and problem-solving at the local level, including discussions on grid infrastructure improvements and transmission infrastructure upgrades.
- The focus is on ensuring that every household not only gets tap water but receives it continuously and sustainably, while also promoting the adoption of renewable energy capacity and exploring battery manufacturing possibilities to support the mission’s goals.
