1. India Develops Indigenous 350 kg-Thrust Turbojet Engine
India has achieved an important milestone in defence and aerospace technology with the development of its first indigenous expendable turbojet engine in the 350 kg-thrust class.
The engine was designed by the Gas Turbine Research Establishment, a laboratory of the Defence Research and Development Organisation, and manufactured and assembled by Azad Engineering.
An expendable turbojet engine is designed for platforms that are not expected to return after completing their mission. Such engines may be used in cruise missiles, target drones and certain unmanned aerial systems.
Why Is This Development Important?
Aero-engine technology is considered one of the most complex areas of defence manufacturing. It requires expertise in high-temperature metallurgy, precision engineering, combustion systems, turbine blades, sensors and electronic control mechanisms.
The indigenous engine can help India:
- Reduce dependence on imported defence components.
- Improve the reliability of domestic missile and unmanned systems.
- Strengthen strategic autonomy in critical defence technologies.

However, the development of a prototype does not automatically mean that the engine is ready for operational deployment. It must undergo extensive ground testing, altitude simulation, flight qualification, platform integration and production validation.

2. Delhi Police Constitutes Special Task Force to Investigate Examination Offences
The Delhi Police has constituted a Special Task Force within its Crime Branch to investigate paper leaks and other offences covered under the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024.
The task force will investigate offences connected with examinations conducted by organisations such as:
- Union Public Service Commission
- Staff Selection Commission
- Railway Recruitment Boards
- Institute of Banking Personnel Selection
- National Testing Agency
- Central ministries and their subordinate offices
The Special Task Force will operate under the leadership of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Crime Branch.
Why Are Paper Leaks a Governance Concern?
Public recruitment examinations provide candidates with an opportunity to enter government services based on merit. Paper leaks and organised cheating undermine equality of opportunity and weaken public trust in institutions.
Examination malpractice can also impose serious financial, psychological and career-related costs on candidates. Repeated cancellations delay recruitment and increase administrative expenditure.
The Public Examinations Act primarily targets organised networks involved in question-paper leakage, impersonation, manipulation of computer systems, tampering with answer sheets and alteration of merit lists.
Organised offences under the Act can attract imprisonment ranging from five to ten years, along with a minimum fine of ₹1 crore.
Role of the Special Task Force
The specialised unit can help address:
- Inter-state paper-leak networks.
- Organised solver and impersonation gangs.
- Insider involvement in examination authorities.
- Tampering with computer-based examinations.
- Digital evidence and cyber-forensic investigation.
- Money trails involving bank accounts and digital payments.
- Coordination between investigators and prosecutors.
Nevertheless, punishment after a paper leak cannot fully compensate students for lost preparation time and delayed opportunities. A prevention-oriented examination-security framework is therefore essential.
Secure printing, encrypted computer systems, vendor accountability, independent security audits, digital access logs and rapid incident-reporting mechanisms must complement criminal investigation.

3. India Condemns Attack on Merchant Vessel MV OMORFI in the Black Sea
India strongly condemned the attack on the commercial vessel MV OMORFI in the Black Sea.
The vessel was reportedly attacked on 18 July 2026 while transiting Russian territorial waters. The ship had ten crew members, including three Indian nationals. One Indian seafarer was killed, while the other two Indian crew members were reported safe.
India described attacks on commercial shipping as unacceptable and called upon all parties to respect international obligations relating to safe navigation and uninterrupted global commerce.
Strategic Importance of the Black Sea
The Black Sea is an important maritime region for the transportation of:
- Grain and oilseeds
- Fertilisers
- Petroleum products
- Coal
- Metals
- Industrial raw materials
It connects with the Mediterranean Sea through the Bosporus, Sea of Marmara and Dardanelles.

4. Indian Scientists Develop Improved Rechargeable Zinc-Air Battery Technology
Scientists at SASTRA Deemed University have developed a low-cost nanofluid electrolyte for electrically rechargeable zinc-air batteries.
The research was supported by the Department of Science and Technology. The electrolyte uses small quantities of silica and zinc-oxide nanoparticles in a conventional electrolyte.
The technology has received Indian Patent IN570691 and has been described as ready for industrial application.
How Does a Zinc-Air Battery Work?
A zinc-air battery uses zinc as the active material at the anode and oxygen from the surrounding atmosphere at the cathode.
During discharge, zinc undergoes oxidation while oxygen is reduced, producing electrical energy. In rechargeable zinc-air batteries, these reactions must be efficiently reversed during charging.
Because oxygen is obtained from the atmosphere instead of being stored entirely inside the battery, zinc-air batteries can offer high theoretical energy density.
Importance of the New Electrolyte
Rechargeable zinc-air batteries face several technical difficulties, including:
- Zinc corrosion.
- Unwanted hydrogen generation.
- Slow oxygen reactions.
- Electrode degradation.
- Reduced cycle life.
- Energy loss during repeated charging.
The newly developed nanofluid electrolyte suppresses hydrogen evolution and zinc corrosion while improving the performance of oxygen reactions at the air cathode.
Potential Benefits for India
Zinc-based battery technology can support India’s energy transition because zinc is more widely available and geographically diversified than lithium and several other critical minerals.
Zinc-air batteries may offer advantages such as:
- Lower raw-material costs.
- Improved fire safety.
- Reduced risk of thermal runaway.
- High theoretical energy density.
- Established zinc-recycling possibilities.
- Lower dependence on imported lithium, cobalt and nickel.
Potential applications include renewable-energy storage, rural microgrids, telecom towers, institutional backup systems, disaster-response systems and selected mobility applications.
However, zinc-air batteries should not be presented as an immediate replacement for lithium-ion batteries. Large-scale deployment will depend on improvements in cycle life, efficiency, durability, air management and commercial manufacturing.

5. Cabinet Approves Ballari-Guntakal Railway Multitracking Project
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved the construction of third and fourth railway lines on the Ballari-Guntakal section across Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
The project is estimated to cost approximately ₹1,264 crore and will add nearly 46 kilometres to the railway network. It is expected to be completed during 2028–29.
The project has been planned under the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan.
Expected Benefits
The project is expected to provide an additional freight capacity of approximately 16.22 million tonnes per annum.
It will strengthen the transportation of:
- Iron ore
- Steel
- Coal
- Limestone
- Dolomite
- Fertilisers
- Food grains
The project is also expected to improve connectivity for nearly 99 villages with a combined population of approximately seven lakh people.
What Is Railway Multitracking?
Multitracking involves constructing additional railway lines parallel to an existing corridor. Third and fourth lines help separate slow freight trains from faster passenger trains and improve the overall capacity of a congested railway section.
The project can provide:
- Increased train capacity.
- Improved passenger-train punctuality.
- Faster freight movement.
- Greater operational flexibility.
- Reduced congestion.
- Better railway-network reliability.
PM GatiShakti Dimension
PM GatiShakti is a Geographic Information System-based national platform for integrated infrastructure planning. It seeks to coordinate the development of railways, roads, ports, airports, waterways and logistics infrastructure.
The Ballari-Guntakal corridor connects important mineral-producing and industrial regions. Removal of bottlenecks along this corridor can improve the movement of raw materials and finished products across several states.
The government estimates that the project may reduce oil consumption and carbon dioxide emissions by shifting bulk freight from roads to railways.
However, its environmental benefits will depend on actual freight diversion, electric railway operations, efficient terminals and responsible construction practices.
Land acquisition, rehabilitation, last-mile infrastructure, environmental compliance and timely completion will remain major implementation challenges.
