11th Ajanta–Ellora International Film Festival Begins at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar
The 11th edition of the Ajanta–Ellora International Film Festival (AEIFF) kicked off today at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad), Maharashtra, with a strong focus on environmental themes and social justice. The festival aims to promote meaningful cinema, independent filmmaking, cultural exchange, and raise awareness about critical issues such as environmental clearance processes, including retrospective environmental clearances, and the importance of maintaining a pollution-free environment.
On the opening day, legendary music composer and Padma Vibhushan awardee Ilaiyaraaja was honored with the prestigious Padmapani Award in recognition of his lifetime contribution to Indian cinema. Eminent filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker and Oscar-winning sound designer Resul Pookutty were also present at the event, lending their support to the festival’s mission of promoting environmental consciousness through film and highlighting the significance of environmental impact assessments.
The festival opened with the screening of the Spanish film “Siret,” which explores the delicate balance between coastal development and environmental preservation in a fictional coastal regulation zone. This thought-provoking film sets the tone for the festival’s emphasis on environmental jurisprudence and the challenges faced by communities in maintaining ecological balance, including the complexities of ex post facto environmental clearances.
Throughout the festival, which continues until Sunday, attendees will have the opportunity to view a wide range of national and international films that address pressing environmental concerns. One notable documentary examines the intricacies of obtaining environmental clearances for development projects, including the controversial practice of ex-post facto approvals, and the importance of thorough environmental impact assessments as mandated by the EIA notification. Another film delves into the complexities of the Forest Conservation Act and its role in preserving India’s vital ecosystems.
AEIFF has curated a special section dedicated to films that explore the concept of environmental democracy, showcasing how communities around the world are fighting for their right to a clean and healthy environment. This section includes a panel discussion on the landmark Vanashakti judgment and its implications for environmental protection in India, particularly in the context of post facto environmental clearances.
The festival organizers have emphasized that AEIFF serves as a platform not only for artistic expression but also for fostering dialogue on critical environmental issues. By featuring films that highlight the precautionary principle in environmental decision-making and the polluter pays principle, the festival aims to educate and inspire audiences to become more environmentally conscious and advocate for a pollution-free environment.
The AEIFF is organized with the support of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Maharashtra Department of Cultural Affairs, with NFDC and the Maharashtra Film, Stage and Cultural Development Corporation as co-presenters. These partnerships underscore the importance of collaboration between government bodies and cultural institutions in promoting both artistic excellence and environmental awareness, including the need for stringent implementation of environmental regulations and the EIA notification.
As the festival unfolds, it promises to be a celebration of cinema that not only entertains but also informs and motivates viewers to consider their role in creating a more sustainable future. Through the power of film, AEIFF hopes to contribute to the ongoing global conversation about environmental protection and the critical need for balanced, sustainable development practices. The festival also aims to shed light on the challenges posed by ex-post environmental clearances and the importance of proactive environmental impact assessments in maintaining a pollution-free environment for future generations.
