India’s Bimal Patel Elected as ITLOS Judge

India’s Prof. Dr. Bimal N. Patel has been elected as a judge of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) for the 2026–2035 term. This is an important achievement for India in the field of international maritime law and ocean governance.

ITLOS is an independent judicial body established under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), 1982. It is located in Hamburg, Germany and has 21 independent judges. The tribunal settles disputes related to maritime boundaries, exclusive economic zones, navigation, fisheries, marine resources, seabed mining and marine environmental protection.

Bimal Patel is a well-known expert in public international law, maritime law and law of the sea. His election strengthens India’s voice in global maritime affairs, especially when oceans are becoming central to trade, security and geopolitics.
For India, this is significant because the country has major interests in the Indian Ocean Region, sea-lane security, blue economy and freedom of navigation. India’s presence in ITLOS reflects its support for peaceful dispute settlement and a rules-based maritime order.

For UPSC, remember: ITLOS — UNCLOS — Hamburg — 21 judges — 9-year term — Bimal Patel, India.
