Bhairav Battalions – Key Facts

The concept of Bhairav Battalions was announced in July 2025 as part of the Indian Army’s effort to adapt its doctrine to modern, limited, and high-intensity border conflicts. These elite infantry strike units began being raised in late 2025, with phased induction and training.

The battalions are expected to become operational gradually from 2026 onwards, starting with priority sectors along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and Line of Control (LoC). They were publicly showcased during the Republic Day Parade 2026, marking their formal introduction.
Each Bhairav Battalion is commanded by an officer of the rank of Colonel. The initiative is being driven at the strategic level by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Upendra Dwivedi, under the Indian Army’s broader modernisation and restructuring framework.
Purpose: rapid response, shock action, escalation control, and dominance in short-duration conflicts.
