Telangana Reports Decline in New HIV Infections

Why in the News ?

On World AIDS Day 2025, Telangana reported a 58% reduction in new HIV infections, marking major progress in testing, treatment, and community outreach under TGSACS. The State’s improved performance aligns with India’s goal of eliminating AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.

Significant Progress in Reducing HIV Burden:

  • The Telangana State AIDS Control Society (TGSACS) has reported major improvements in testing, treatment access, and community outreach
  • These interventions aim to stabilise HIV as a manageable chronic illness, ensuring timely linkage to care and improved survival rates.
  • The adult HIV prevalence rate declined from 44% in 2023 to 0.41% in 2025, marking a considerable drop.
  • Most notably, the State saw a 58% fall in new HIV infections, indicating better prevention strategies, increased awareness, and early diagnosis.
  • Telangana’s model blends medical care, social support, nutrition assistance, and counselling, strengthening long-term adherence to treatment.

UNAIDS 95-95-95 Framework: Telangana’s Performance

  • Telangana is progressing steadily under the global UNAIDS 95-95-95 framework aimed at ending the AIDS epidemic.
  • The target requires: 95% of people living with HIV knowing their status, 95% of those diagnosed receiving ART, and 95% of patients on ART achieving viral suppression.
  • Telangana aims to bring 1,56,961 HIV-positive individuals under this framework.
  • So far, 1,43,173 people (covering 2%) have been integrated into the system, showing steady but incomplete progress.
  • Increased coverage ensures reduced viral load, which directly prevents onward transmission and improves quality of life.

Key Concepts and Institutions:

●      HIV Prevalence: Percentage of adults (15–49 years) living with HIV in a region.
