Taragiri Stealth Frigate Delivered to Indian Navy

Taragiri Stealth Frigate Delivered to Indian Navy

Why in the News ?

The Indian Navy has received Taragiri, the fourth Nilgiri-Class (Project 17A) stealth frigate, marking a major step in Aatmanirbharta in warship building. Delivered in Mumbai, the advanced platform enhances India’s maritime capability and continues the Navy’s rapid induction of P17A ships.

Key Features and Strategic Importance of Taragiri:

  • Taragiri is the fourth advanced stealth frigate built under Project 17A, designed to meet evolving maritime threats through enhanced stealth, firepower, survivability, and automation.
  • The frigate is a modern reincarnation of the former INS Taragiri, a Leander-class vessel that served from 1980 to 2013, symbolising continuity in India’s naval heritage.
  • Its induction aligns with India’s push for self-reliance in defence manufacturing, strengthening indigenous capacities in naval design and shipbuilding.
  • P17A ships outperform the earlier P17 (Shivalik) class with upgraded weapons, sensors, electronic warfare systems, and overall mission versatility.
  • Built as a multi-mission platform, Taragiri enhances India’s ability to respond to surface, air, and sub-surface threats in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

Delivery Timeline and Progress Under Project 17A

  • The Defence Ministry highlighted that Taragiri’s delivery is a key milestone, reflecting the accelerated pace of naval modernisation.
  • This is the fourth P17A frigate delivered within the last eleven months, showcasing improved project efficiency and shipyard capabilities.
  • The remaining three P17A ships are scheduled for progressive delivery by August next year, which will further strengthen India’s maritime deterrence.
  • The project integrates advanced stealth design, allowing reduced radar cross-section, contributing to improved operational survivability.
  • The frigates under P17A are built using modular construction techniques, enabling faster production and better quality control.
