  • He played a leading role in reorganising the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA) after the death of Ram Prasad Bismil, strengthening revolutionary activities across northern India.
  • Azad actively participated in the Kakori Train Action (1925), which aimed to secure funds for the revolutionary movement by targeting the colonial government’s treasury.
  • He closely collaborated with revolutionaries such as Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru, promoting the ideals of sacrifice, courage, and national liberation.
  • In 1931, surrounded by British police at Alfred Park (now Chandra Shekhar Azad Park), Prayagraj, he chose to sacrifice his life rather than surrender, becoming an enduring symbol of resistance.

About Chandra Shekhar Azad & HSRA :

●  Chandra Shekhar Azad (1906–1931) was one of India’s most prominent revolutionary freedom fighters and a key leader of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA).

●  The HSRA, formed in 1928 from the earlier Hindustan Republican Association (HRA), sought to overthrow British rule and establish a socialist republic in India through revolutionary action.

●  The Kakori Train Action (1925) involved the seizure of government funds from a train near Kakori (Uttar Pradesh). It became a landmark event in India’s revolutionary movement and demonstrated organised resistance to colonial authority.

●  Azad firmly adhered to his vow that he would never be captured alive, earning the name “Azad” (Free) after declaring it before a British magistrate during the Non-Cooperation Movement.

●  The revolutionary movement complemented the broader national struggle led by Mahatma Gandhi, contributing significantly to the rise of nationalist consciousness and inspiring countless young Indians to join the freedom movement.
