India and Japan Deepen Strategic and Economic Partnership

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi held summit-level talks in New Delhi during the 16th India–Japan Annual Summit. The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation in economic security, defence, artificial intelligence, energy resilience, critical technologies and Indo-Pacific cooperation. Several agreements were exchanged, including areas such as economic and energy security, pharmaceuticals, defence and AI.

The summit assumes importance at a time when India and Japan are seeking resilient supply chains, stronger technology partnerships and deeper security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific. Both countries also reiterated the importance of a free, open and rules-based Indo-Pacific, making the meeting strategically significant beyond bilateral relations.

Government Seeks Explanation from Meta on WhatsApp Username Feature

The Government of India has asked Meta to explain WhatsApp’s proposed username feature within three days and pause its rollout pending consultations. The concern is that username-based communication may create risks of fraud, phishing, impersonation, identity spoofing and misuse by cybercriminals.

The proposed feature would allow users to communicate without revealing phone numbers, but the government has raised questions about user verification, traceability and safeguards against online scams. This development highlights India’s growing emphasis on digital accountability, cyber safety and platform responsibility in a rapidly expanding digital ecosystem.

Indian Army to Raise Baaz Battalions for Drone Warfare

The Indian Army is moving to raise specialised “Baaz Battalions” under the Army Aviation Corps to strengthen drone-based operations. These units are expected to improve aerial surveillance, battlefield awareness, intelligence gathering and rapid response capability along sensitive frontiers.

The move reflects the changing nature of modern warfare, where drones are increasingly used for reconnaissance, precision targeting, logistics support and tactical operations. For India, the formation of dedicated drone-focused units marks a major step toward integrating unmanned systems into conventional military planning.

SIPRI Reports India’s Estimated Nuclear Warhead Deployment

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute’s 2026 assessment has drawn attention to India’s nuclear posture. SIPRI estimated India’s nuclear stockpile at about 190 warheads as of January 2026 and assessed, with uncertainty, that India may have started occasionally deploying a small number of warheads—around 12—on one nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine.

This is a sensitive strategic assessment and should be interpreted carefully. SIPRI itself notes uncertainty around the estimate. However, the finding is important because it points to India’s maturing nuclear triad and the increasing role of sea-based deterrence in national security planning.

VB-G RAM G Act Comes into Force Across Rural India

The Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin), or VB-G RAM G Act, 2025, has come into force across rural India from 1 July 2026. The Act provides eligible rural households a statutory entitlement to 125 days of guaranteed wage employment, replacing the earlier MGNREGA framework.

The government has also notified revised wage rates under the Act, with no notified daily wage below ₹300 and an average increase of over 10%. The reform is projected as a major rural livelihood measure aimed at improving income security, creating durable rural assets and strengthening village-level development.

India–South Korea Defence Cooperation Expands Through K9 Vajra-T

India and South Korea continue to deepen defence cooperation through the K9 Vajra-T self-propelled howitzer programme. The K9 Vajra-T is based on South Korea’s K9 Thunder platform and is manufactured in India by Larsen & Toubro with localisation. Reports indicate that India may procure more than 300 additional guns, which could take the total fleet beyond 500 if the proposal is approved.

The K9 Vajra-T has become an important example of India’s defence industrial partnership model, combining foreign technology with domestic manufacturing. Its expanded induction would strengthen artillery firepower, especially in difficult terrain and high-altitude deployment conditions.
