Vibrant Villages Programme-II to Strengthen Border Areas

Under the Vibrant Villages Programme-II, approved in 2025, six villages in Kathua district of Jammu & Kashmir have been selected for focused development. The programme covers 15 States and 2 Union Territories and aims to improve infrastructure, ensure last-mile welfare delivery, strengthen border security, and promote socio-economic development in International Border areas.

This initiative is significant because border villages are not only habitations but also strategic assets. Improved connectivity, welfare access, livelihood support, and public infrastructure can help reduce migration, improve local resilience, and strengthen India’s border management framework.

India and New Zealand to Sign Free Trade Agreement

India and New Zealand are set to sign a Free Trade Agreement on April 27, 2026. The agreement is expected to provide duty-free access for Indian exports, reduce tariffs on imports from New Zealand, and deepen cooperation in trade, investment, mobility, and Indo-Pacific economic engagement.

The FTA is important for both countries as it can expand market access, strengthen supply chains, and create new opportunities for businesses, exporters, students, and professionals. It also reflects India’s growing focus on trade partnerships with strategically important Indo-Pacific nations.

Supreme Court Recognises Safe Highway Travel Under Article 21

The Supreme Court of India has held that safe travel on National Highways is an integral part of Article 21 of the Constitution, which guarantees the right to life and personal liberty.

The Court directed the removal of encroachments, banned unauthorised dhabas and parking on highways, and called for better enforcement, surveillance, and emergency response systems. The ruling is significant because road safety is directly linked to the protection of life. By connecting highway safety with Article 21, the Court has strengthened accountability in transport governance and public infrastructure management.

WHO Prequalifies Infant-Specific Malaria Drug

The World Health Organization has granted prequalification to an infant-specific artemether-lumefantrine formulation for malaria treatment. This certification confirms standards of quality, safety, and efficacy and supports public procurement for wider availability.

The development is particularly important for neonatal and infant malaria treatment, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa, where under-five mortality remains a major public health concern. The move can improve access to appropriate treatment and reduce preventable child deaths caused by malaria.

Digital Panels Added at Basra Memorial for Indian Soldiers

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission has added digital panels at the Basra Memorial, naming 33,000 Indian soldiers of the First World War. This step corrects a colonial-era omission in the commemoration of soldiers who participated in the Mesopotamia Campaign.

The inclusion ensures more equitable remembrance of Indian soldiers who served and sacrificed during the war. It also highlights the need to recognise India’s military contribution to global history with dignity and accuracy.
