Ahmedabad to Host 2030 Commonwealth Games
Ahmedabad Recommended as Host for the 2030 Commonwealth Games
In a landmark moment for Indian sports, Ahmedabad in Gujarat has been officially recommended as the host city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games by the Executive Board of Commonwealth Sport. If approved at the General Assembly meeting in November 2025, this will mark India’s second time hosting the Games after New Delhi 2010, coinciding with the centenary celebration of the Commonwealth Sport Movement.
A Symbol of India’s Rising Sports Power
The recommendation showcases India’s growing global sporting stature and world-class infrastructure development. The joint proposal was submitted by the Government of India, Government of Gujarat, and the Commonwealth Games Association of India (CGI).
This recognition aligns perfectly with the Government of India’s long-term sports development vision, embodied in two major initiatives often asked in competitive exams:
Khelo India Programme (launched in 2018): A flagship scheme of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports aimed at identifying young sporting talent, strengthening sports infrastructure, and building a sports culture from the grassroots level.
Fit India Movement (launched in 2019): A nationwide campaign initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to encourage citizens to adopt active lifestyles and integrate physical fitness into daily life, thereby linking sports with public health and national development.
Together, these initiatives reflect India’s transformation from a participant nation to a global sporting hub, promoting youth empowerment, health awareness, and economic growth through sports.
Leaders’ Reactions
Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the recommendation is a tribute to India’s world-class sports facilities and its athletes’ excellence on the global stage.
Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya termed the announcement a moment of national pride and reaffirmed India’s commitment to hosting a sustainable, inclusive, and innovative Games.
CGI President P.T. Usha described the 2030 event as “Games for the Future,” focused on technology, sustainability, and gender equality. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel praised the Prime Minister’s leadership and called the recommendation a proud milestone for the state.
Infrastructure Vision
The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave in Motera, Ahmedabad is expected to be the central venue for the Games. Designed as a multi-disciplinary sports complex, it will feature eco-friendly infrastructure, athlete villages, and integrated transport systems, ensuring both sustainability and legacy value.
