India-Africa Naval Exercise AIKEYME Begins in Tanzania

India and African nations launched the first edition of the multilateral maritime exercise AIKEYME off Tanzania’s coast. The exercise aims to boost regional cooperation, enhance interoperability among navies, and strengthen maritime security under India’s MAHASAGAR vision for mutual growth.

India Strengthens Naval Ties with Africa:

  • The first edition of the multilateral naval exerciseAfrica India Key Maritime Engagement (AIKEYME) — started on April 13 off the Dar-es-Salaam coast, Tanzania.
  • The exercise focuses on maritime security, regional cooperation, and strengthening collaboration between India and African nations.
  • INS Sunayna, designated as Indian Ocean Ship (IOS) SAGAR, carrying 44 naval personnel from nine friendly countries, arrived at the port before the exercise.

Purpose and Participation

  • AIKEYME aims to enhance interoperability and joint operational synergy among partner navies.
  • Participating nations: Comoros, Djibouti, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, South Africa, along with India and Tanzania.
  • The initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision — MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions).

Symbol of Strategic Friendship

  • INS Chennai (destroyer) and INS Kesari (Landing Ship Tank – Large) arrived early for the ceremonial inauguration.
  • The event was co-hosted by the Indian Navy and Tanzania’s People’s Defence Force (TPDF).
  • Featured a Ceremonial Guard and the joint performance of national anthems by Indian Navy Band and TPDF, symbolizing strong bilateral ties.
