INDIA-CHINA DIPLOMATIC TALKS IN LAOS

Why in the news?

  • On 25thjuly, India and China discussed complete disengagement along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) to normalize bilateral relations.
  • External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi met on the sidelines of the ASEAN meetings in Vientiane, Laos, to review the situation and continue discussions from their previous meeting in Astana.

About Line of Actual Control (LAC)

  • Definition: The LAC is the boundary separating Indian-controlled and Chinese-controlled territories.

  • Eastern: Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim.
  • Middle: Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.
  • Western: Ladakh.
  • Length: India estimates it at 3,488 km; China estimates it around 2,000 km.

  • India: The LAC is not the official claim line; India’s claim includes Aksai Chin and Gilgit-Baltistan.
