Harike Wetland
News: The Harike wetland saw fewer migratory birds arrive this year, according to a recent water bird census.
- One of the greatest wetlands in northern India is the Harike Wetland Sanctuary, commonly referred to locally as “Hari-ke-Pattan.”
- It is located where the Sutlej and Beas rivers, two of Punjab’s largest rivers, meet.
- The construction of a barrage on the River Sutlej led to the creation of Harike Wetland in 1953.
- It has been chosen as one of India’s Ramsar sites.
- This artificial riverine wetland is located in three different Punjabi districts: Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, and Kapurthala.
