Why in the News?
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has added Lucknow to its Creative Cities Network under the category of Gastronomy, acknowledging its rich and diverse culinary heritage. This recognition places Lucknow among 70 global gastronomy cities, making it the second Indian city after Hyderabad.
UNESCO Recognition and Global Significance:
- Global Honour: At the 43rd General Conference in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, UNESCO recognised Lucknow for its culinary excellence and historical food traditions.
- Second Indian City: Lucknow joins Hyderabad as the only two Indian cities in the Gastronomy category of the Creative Cities Network.
- Global Network: With this addition, 408 cities across 100+ countries are now part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN).
- Promotion of Culture: The tag highlights Lucknow’s cultural richness and culinary diversity, promoting India’s intangible heritage globally.
- Government Support: Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh said the recognition will boost culinary tourism and local employment, potentially creating opportunities in the voluntary carbon market sector and carbon offset projects related to sustainable culinary practices.

- Culinary Legacy: Lucknow, known for its Awadhi cuisine, features iconic dishes such as kebabs, biryanis, and kormas, reflecting Mughal and Nawabi influences. The city’s culinary traditions also emphasize sustainable forest management practices in sourcing ingredients, which could be linked to future carbon offset projects.
- Cultural Symbolism: The city’s food culture is intertwined with its tehzeeb (etiquette) and artistic traditions, forming a part of its identity and hospitality.
- Tourism Boost: The new status is expected to draw international tourists, promoting food festivals, culinary trails, and heritage walks.
