Tripura Queen Pineapple Eyes Global Market Recognition

Why in the News ?

The Tripura Government is organizing the Tripura Global Pineapple Festival 2025 in New Delhi to promote the state’s famous Queen Pineapple internationally, strengthen export linkages, and establish it as a global agricultural brand.

Tripura’s Push to Globalise Queen Pineapple:

The state is promoting “Tripura Queen Pineapple” as an international brand through the upcoming Tripura Global Pineapple Festival.

The festival aims to connect farmers directly with buyers, exporters, food-processing companies, and investors.

The government is implementing the Mission Queen Pineapple of Tripura, a three-year programme worth ₹236 crore to enhance production, marketing, and value addition while ensuring compliance with environmental impact assessment norms for sustainable agricultural expansion.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to attend the event, highlighting its national significance.

The initiative seeks to expand export markets in South Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, improving farmers’ incomes and strengthening Tripura’s agricultural economy.

Economic Importance and Export Potential

Tripura’s unique agro-climatic conditions make it one of India’s leading pineapple-producing regions.

The state cultivates approximately 11,698 hectares of pineapple, producing around 1.71 lakh metric tonnes annually.

About 23,000 metric tonnes are available as marketable surplus for domestic and international trade.

Since 2018-19, Tripura has exported Queen and Kew varieties to countries such as Bangladesh and the UAE, while processed pineapple products have reached Germany and Russia.

Pineapple-based products such as jams, jellies, chocolates, and fibre extracted from pineapple leaves are creating employment opportunities in processing, packaging, and marketing sectors.

About Queen Pineapple and GI Tag :

Queen Pineapple received the Geographical Indication (GI) Tag for its distinctive golden-yellow colour, aroma, sweetness, and nutritional value.

The fruit was declared the State Fruit of Tripura in 2018.

Pineapple cultivation is concentrated in tribal-dominated regions, especially Killa in Gomati district, supporting rural livelihoods while adhering to the Forest Conservation Act provisions for sustainable land use.

The crop requires minimal chemical inputs, making it environmentally sustainable and suitable for organic farming practices that promote a pollution free environment, aligning with the polluter pays principle of environmental jurisprudence.

A Geographical Indication (GI) is an intellectual property right granted to products whose quality, reputation, or characteristics are linked to a specific geographical region. It is governed by the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999.
