Why in the News ?

Mahamahopadhyay Swami Bhadreshdas, a renowned Sanskrit scholar and philosopher of the Vedanta tradition, received the Saraswati Samman 2024 from the K.K. Birla Foundation for his work Swaminarayan Siddhant Sudha at a ceremony in Ahmedabad, recognising his contributions to Indian philosophy and Sanskrit literature.

Honour and Ceremony Highlights:

  • The Saraswati Samman 2024 was formally presented at BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir, Ahmedabad, by Governors Acharya Devvrat (Gujarat & Maharashtra).
  • The award included a citation, a plaque, a statue of Goddess Saraswati, and a ₹15 lakh cash prize.
  • Dignitaries present included Justice (Retd) Arjan Kumar Sikri, Swami Anandswarupdas, Swami Brahmaviharidas, and academic leaders.
  • Suresh Rituparna (K.K. Birla Foundation) praised Bhadreshdas’s contribution to Sanskrit and philosophy.
  • Swami Bhadreshdas dedicated the award money to BAPS for charitable initiatives, symbolising humility and service.

Scholar and His Work

  • Born in 1966 in Nanded, Maharashtra, Swami Bhadreshdas became a sadhu in 1981 under Pramukh Swami Maharaj of BAPS.
  • He has studied Sanskrit and Hindu philosophy for over three decades, earning postgraduate degrees, a PhD on the Bhagavad Gita, and a Litt. in Vedanta.
  • His monumental 5-volume work, Swaminarayan Bhashyam, is a Sanskrit commentary on the Prasthanatrayi—the Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, and Brahmasutras.
  • His award-winning text Swaminarayan Siddhant Sudha harmonises Vedic and Vedantic principles, presenting the Akshar-Purushottam Darshana in a logical, fluent Sanskrit style.
  • The work highlights the Swaminarayan school of philosophy, positioning it as a distinct Vedantic tradition in contemporary scholarship.

●     The Saraswati Samman, instituted by the K.K. Birla Foundation in 1991, is among India’s highest literary honours.

●     It recognises outstanding works published in the last 10 years in any of the 22 languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.

●     The award spans creative literature, criticism, essays, biographies, and literary history.

●     Past awardees include Harivansh Rai Bachchan, Vijay Tendulkar, Shamsur Rahman Faruqi, and Prabha Varma.
