A National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management (NCSCM) assessment has found no measurable ecological or socio-economic damage to Lakshadweep following the sinking of MSC Elsa 3 off Kerala in May 2025. However, the incident highlights island ecosystems’ vulnerability to maritime accidents.

Study Findings on Lakshadweep:

  •     The container vessel MSC Elsa 3, carrying hazardous cargo, sank off the Kerala coast on May 25, 2025, raising concerns about possible pollution reaching Lakshadweep.
  •     The NCSCM, Chennai, conducted a comprehensive assessment using field surveys, remote sensing, numerical spill-trajectory modelling and stakeholder consultations.
  •     The study found no measurable ecological or socio-economic damage to the Lakshadweep archipelago attributable to the shipwreck.
  •     Seawater and sediment parameters remained within natural baseline ranges characteristic of coral-atoll ecosystems.
  •     Biological assessments found no significant stress or degradation in plankton, benthic communities, coral reefs, seagrass meadows and lagoon habitats.
  •     The assessment was undertaken following directions of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), which had taken suo motu cognisance of concerns regarding the possible movement of containers towards the Kerala coast.

Lessons for Maritime Environmental Preparedness

  •     Although no significant damage was detected, the incident demonstrates the inherent vulnerability of remote islands to oil spills, hazardous cargo and maritime accidents.
  •     India needs early-warning systems capable of rapidly forecasting the movement of pollutants and floating containers.
  •     Island-specific contingency plans should be prepared according to local ecological conditions and response capabilities.
  •     Effective management requires coordination among coastal authorities, maritime agencies, environmental institutions, disaster-management bodies and local communities.
