- The Awami League, led by Sheikh Hasina, won a majority in Bangladesh’s national elections.
- Thus far, the results for 224 of the 299 seats have been announced.
- Nine Jatiya Party candidates, 49 independent candidates, and one candidate from another party won seats, leaving the Awami League with 165 seats.
- The results for the remaining seats, for which the counting is currently in progress, will be known by this afternoon.
- With the overwhelming win, the current prime minister, Sheikh Hasina of the Awami League, will form the government for the fifth time overall and for the fourth time in a row.
- She won the Gopalganj-3 constituency by a landslide. Hasina has given her partymen instructions not to hold a victory procession following the declaration of the election results.
- Out of 300 constituencies, 299 had voting yesterday. The final figures released by the Election Commission (EC) indicate that approximately 40% of voters participated in the parliamentary elections overall.
- The main opposition party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), along with its supporters, boycotted the voting process on the grounds that the Sheikh Hasina-led government could not hold a free and fair election.

- Upon Bangladesh’s independence in December 1971, India was the first nation to recognize it as a separate and independent state and to establish diplomatic ties with it. Bangladesh and India are connected on a cultural, social, economic, and civilizational level and Bangladesh is strategically significant due to its location as India’s eastern neighbor. It gives India access to the Bay of Bengal and serves as a vital trade and communication route to Southeast Asia.
- Economic Cooperation:
- India’s largest trading partner on the subcontinent is Bangladesh. India exported $8 billion worth of goods to Bangladesh between April and November of 2022;
- Under the terms of the South Asian Free Trade Area (SAFTA), India has granted duty-free and quota-free access to Bangladesh on all tariff lines, with the exception of tobacco and alcohol, since 2011;
- To lessen their reliance on the US dollar, Bangladesh and India started transacting in rupees in July 2023;
- As per the Ministry of Tourism’s India Tourism Statistics Report 2022, Bangladesh emerged as India’s second-largest source of tourists in 2021.
- Defence cooperation:
- India’s border with Bangladesh is 4096.7 km long, the longest it has with any of its neighbors;
- Bangladesh is bordered by Assam, West Bengal, Mizoram, Meghalaya, and Tripura;
- Exercises: Army’s – Sampriti and the Navy’s – Bongosagar.
