International Purple Fest 2024

  • Beginning on December 8, 2024, the much-awaited International Purple Fest – Goa 2024 will unfold into a colorful celebration of empowerment and inclusivity that will last until January 13.
  • The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, is supporting this event, which is being organized by the State Commissioner’s Office for Persons with Disabilities in partnership with the Directorate of Social Welfare, Government of Goa, and with a grand inauguration planned in Panaji.
  • About:
    • The festival’s opening ceremony will feature captivating musical, dance, and entertainment performances that will highlight the stories of Persons with Disabilities (PwDs).
    • A highlight of the Opening Ceremony will be the performance of the Purple Anthem, “Dhumal,” which showcases revered musicians from the Indian music industry alongside people with disabilities from all over Goa, signifying inclusivity and unity.
    • The International Purple Fest – Goa 2024 promises to be a global celebration of diversity, inclusivity, and empowerment, with over 8,000 delegates expected to attend. Follow along for updates on this remarkable journey toward a future with greater inclusivity.

About Disability

  • According to the 2011 census, there are almost 2.68 crores (or 2.2% of the total population) in India who are facing the issue of disability;
  • The 2016 Rights of People with Disabilities Act:
    • It was the Act that took the place of the 1995 Persons with Disabilities Act.
    • The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) is ratified by India and these actions satisfies India’s UNCRPD commitment.
    • The Act increased the number of disabilities from the current seven to twenty-one and gave the Central Government the authority to add more.
    • The 21 impairments consist of: Lack of vision; Dim vision; Leprosy Rehabilitated individuals; Deafness and Hard of Hearing: Impaired Hearing; Disability of Locomotors; The dwarfism; Mental Illness; Mental Disease; Spectrum Disorders of Autism; Dystrophies of Muscle; Persistent neurological disorders; Particular Learning Difficulties; Multiple Illnesses; Language and speech impairment; Thalassemia; Anemia; Sickle cell illness; Cognitive Impairment; Multiple Sclerosis; Multiple Disabilities, including deafness and blindness; Acid Attack victim; Parkinson’s disease.
