National Supercomputing Mission Explained
NATIONAL SUPERCOMPUTING MISSION: BUILDING INDIA’S INDIGENOUS HIGH-PERFORMANCE COMPUTING ECOSYSTEM
Why in the News?
The government has highlighted the progress of the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) in developing an indigenous ecosystem covering supercomputer design, manufacturing, system software and specialised applications, strengthening India’s technological self-reliance.
NATIONAL SUPERCOMPUTING MISSION AND INDIGENOUS CAPABILITY
- Mission Launch: The National Supercomputing Mission was launched in April 2015 with an outlay of approximately ₹4,500 crore to strengthen India’s advanced computing capabilities.
- Institutional Framework: The Mission is jointly steered by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).
- Indigenous Ecosystem: NSM promotes domestic capabilities across hardware, system software, applications and supercomputer design, reducing dependence on imported technologies.
- Computing Access: Expanded supercomputing infrastructure can democratise access to high-performance computing (HPC) for researchers, universities, scientific institutions and industry.
- Strategic Autonomy: Indigenous supercomputing strengthens technological sovereignty, particularly in strategically important domains requiring sophisticated computational infrastructure and advanced digital capabilities.
SUPERCOMPUTING, INNOVATION AND INDIA’S TECHNOLOGICAL FUTURE
- Scientific Applications: High-performance computing supports computationally intensive fields including weather forecasting, climate modelling, drug discovery, genomics, materials science and astrophysics.
- Energy Efficiency: Future NSM systems emphasise faster and energy-efficient computing, addressing the substantial electricity and cooling requirements associated with advanced data-processing infrastructure.
- Human Capital: Developing domestic HPC capabilities requires skilled professionals in semiconductor technology, computer architecture, software engineering, artificial intelligence and computational sciences.
- Industrial Competitiveness: Greater access to indigenous HPC infrastructure can strengthen R&D capabilities, innovation and advanced manufacturing, enabling Indian industries to undertake computationally intensive research domestically.
- Digital Sovereignty: Building domestic supercomputing capabilities complements India’s broader objectives of Atmanirbhar Bharat, technological resilience and reduced vulnerability to external technology restrictions.
NATIONAL SUPERCOMPUTING MISSION AND HIGH-PERFORMANCE COMPUTING● Supercomputing Basics: A supercomputer is an extremely powerful computing system designed to execute enormous numbers of calculations rapidly through extensive parallel processing. ● HPC Architecture: High-Performance Computing (HPC) combines powerful processors, high-speed interconnects, specialised storage and software frameworks to solve computationally demanding problems efficiently. ● PARAM Series: India’s indigenous supercomputing journey includes the PARAM series developed by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), an important milestone in domestic HPC capability. ● National Infrastructure: NSM seeks to create a distributed network of advanced computing facilities, integrating supercomputing resources, research institutions, academia and specialised applications. ● Strategic Importance: Supercomputing constitutes critical technological infrastructure, supporting national priorities such as scientific research, disaster prediction, defence-related applications, artificial intelligence and technological innovation. |
