Mission Senehjori Boosts Assam’s Muga Silk Industry

Why in the News ?

Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched Mission Senehjori, a comprehensive initiative aimed at transforming Assam’s renowned Muga silk sector into a globally competitive luxury textile industry while enhancing livelihoods in the Northeast through sustainable practices and environmental democracy.

Mission Senehjori: Objectives and Key Features

Mission Senehjori is a cluster-based development programme focused on strengthening the entire Muga silk value chain with proper environmental clearance mechanisms.

The initiative seeks to promote Assam’s unique golden Muga silk as a premium global luxury textile while ensuring compliance with environmental impact assessment norms.

It covers all stages of production, including host plant cultivation under the Forest Conservation Act framework, silkworm seed production, reeling, weaving, and value addition.

The mission also emphasizes branding, quality assurance, export promotion, and digital traceability of Muga silk products through sustainable environmental jurisprudence.

Integration of tourism, cultural heritage, and traditional craftsmanship forms an important component of the programme, promoting a pollution free environment.

Economic and Cultural Significance

The initiative aims to generate sustainable livelihoods for local communities engaged in sericulture and weaving, adhering to the precautionary principle in resource management.

It seeks to enhance the competitiveness of the Northeast’s traditional textile sector in international markets while following the polluter pays principle.

Improved infrastructure and market access are expected to increase income opportunities for artisans and farmers without requiring retrospective environmental clearances.

The government views Muga silk not only as an economic product but also as a symbol of India’s rich cultural and civilisational heritage.

The programme aligns with broader efforts to promote Atmanirbhar Bharat, rural development, and the economic integration of the North Eastern Region.
