Why in the news?

India’s employment crisis highlighted by ILO report citing rising youth unemployment, skill gaps, and challenges in accessing quality jobs.

Highlights of the report:

Youth Unemployment and Education

  • The share of unemployed youth with secondary or higher education doubled from 35.2% in 2000 to 65.7% in 2022.
  • Nearly 83% of India’s unemployed workforce comprises youngsters.
  • Employment and underemployment among the youth rose till 2019 but decreased during the pandemic years, especially affecting educated youth.

Labour Market Indicators

  • Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR), Worker Population Ratio (WPR), and Unemployment Rate (UR) deteriorated from 2000 to 2018 but slightly improved post-2019.

What is The International Labour Organisation (ILO)?
