About New NREGA Wage Rates Notification:

  • The Centre notified new wage rates for unskilled manual workers under MGNREGA 2005 for FY 2024-2025.
  • Effective from April 1, 2024, these rates vary across states and union territories (UTs).
  • Goa witnesses the highest increase of 10.56%, while Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand see the lowest at 3.04% each.
  • Goa’s daily wage rises to Rs 356, with Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana also experiencing over 10% increments.
What is Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA)?

●  MGNREGA, launched in 2005 by the Ministry of Rural Development, is one of the world’s largest work guarantee programs.

●  MGNREGA guarantees 100 days of employment annually to rural households for unskilled manual work.

●  Ensures minimum wages as per state laws and mandates at least one-third participation of women.

●  Employs a demand-driven approach with decentralised planning involving Panchayati Raj Institutions.

About the initiatives under MGNREGA:

Amrit Sarovar:

●   Objective: Construction or renovation of at least 75 Amrit Sarovars (ponds) in each district to increase water availability.

Purpose: Enhance surface and underground water resources.

Jaldoot App:

●   Launched: September 2022.

●   Function: Measures water levels in Gram Panchayats using selected open wells twice a year.

Ombudsperson for MGNREGS:

●   Ombudsperson App launched in February 2022.

●   Purpose: Facilitates smooth reporting and categorization of grievances related to MGNREGA implementation from various sources.
