1. Strait of Hormuz and India’s LPG Security

The Strait of Hormuz has again come into focus due to rising tensions in West Asia. It is one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints and connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea.

For India, this route is extremely important because a major share of crude oil, LNG and LPG shipments from West Asia passes through this region. Any disruption can affect domestic fuel prices, LPG availability, inflation and India’s external sector stability.

UPSC Relevance

This issue is important for GS Paper II under International Relations and GS Paper III under Energy Security and Economy. It also highlights the need for India to diversify energy imports, strengthen strategic reserves and enhance maritime security.

Key Points for Prelims

The Strait of Hormuz lies between Iran and Oman. It connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman. It is a major route for crude oil, LNG and LPG exports from West Asia.

2. Gig Workers Social Security: Expanding India’s Welfare Net

India’s platform economy is growing rapidly through food delivery, ride-hailing, e-commerce, logistics, domestic services and digital freelancing. This has created flexible employment opportunities but has also raised concerns about income insecurity and lack of social protection.

The government is moving towards comprehensive social security coverage for gig and platform workers. Proposed measures include accident insurance, health coverage, digital registration and integration with the e-Shram framework.

UPSC Relevance

This topic is important for GS Paper II under Social Justice and Governance and GS Paper III under Employment, Inclusive Growth and Digital Economy.

Key Points for Prelims

The Code on Social Security, 2020 recognises gig workers and platform workers. e-Shram is a national database for unorganised workers. Platform workers usually do not have permanent employer-employee contracts.

Mains Angle

India needs a portable social security model where benefits follow the worker across platforms and states. Platform companies may also be required to contribute to welfare funds for gig workers.

3. NFHS-6 Public Health Data: India’s Maternal and Child Health Progress

The National Family Health Survey is one of India’s most important sources of health and demographic data. NFHS-6 shows significant gains in maternal and child health.

Institutional deliveries have reached 90.6 percent, antenatal care coverage has improved to 95.9 percent, and full immunisation among children aged 12 to 23 months has improved to 87.1 percent. These trends show better access to public health services and stronger health delivery mechanisms.

UPSC Relevance

This topic is relevant for GS Paper II under Health, Governance and Social Justice and GS Paper III under Human Development and Nutrition.

Key Points for Prelims

NFHS stands for National Family Health Survey. It provides data on fertility, maternal health, child health, nutrition, sanitation, gender indicators and health service delivery.

Mains Angle

India has improved access to health services, but the next challenge is quality, equity and last-mile delivery. Persistent anaemia, regional inequality, nutrition gaps and rising non-communicable diseases remain key concerns.

4. Andhra Pradesh Green Energy Corridor

Andhra Pradesh has unveiled a ₹22,000 crore Green Energy Corridor Phase-III plan to integrate around 18 GW of renewable energy into the state grid.

Green Energy Corridors are transmission networks designed to evacuate renewable power from generation-rich regions and integrate it into the electricity grid. This is important because renewable energy generation alone is not enough; India also needs strong transmission infrastructure and storage capacity.

UPSC Relevance

This topic is important for GS Paper III under Energy, Infrastructure, Environment and Climate Change.

Key Points for Prelims

Green Energy Corridors help integrate solar and wind power into the grid. Renewable energy requires flexible grid management because of intermittency. Pumped storage, battery storage and green hydrogen are important for balancing renewable power.

Mains Angle

India’s clean energy transition requires not only generation expansion but also transmission reform, storage support, smart grid systems and financially stronger DISCOMs.

5. India’s First Edge AI Chip A2000

Kerala-based startup Netrasemi has launched the A2000 edge AI system-on-chip. It has been designed for edge AI applications and fabricated on TSMC’s 12 nm process node.

Edge AI chips allow devices to process data locally instead of sending everything to cloud servers. This is useful in smart cameras, drones, robotics, surveillance, healthcare devices and industrial automation.

UPSC Relevance

This topic is important for GS Paper III under Science and Technology, Artificial Intelligence, Semiconductors and Industrial Policy.

Key Points for Prelims

Edge AI means processing AI tasks locally on devices. A System-on-Chip integrates multiple computing components on a single chip. A fabless company designs chips but outsources fabrication to foundries.

Mains Angle

India’s AI ambitions require domestic hardware capability along with software innovation. The rise of chip-design startups reflects India’s movement towards deep-tech manufacturing, though fabrication dependence on global foundries remains a challenge.
