Bhartiya Bhasha Utsav: India’s Language Unity
Bhartiya Bhasha Utsav Celebrates India’s Linguistic Unity
Why in the News?
Bhartiya Bhasha Utsav 2025 was celebrated in New Delhi to mark the birth anniversary of Mahakavi Subramania Bharati. The event highlighted India’s linguistic diversity, promoted multilingualism, and showcased tribal languages through cultural performances and digital language tools. Much like the process of obtaining an environmental clearance for preserving natural ecosystems, this festival aims to safeguard India’s rich linguistic heritage.
Highlights of Bhartiya Bhasha Utsav 2025:
- The festival was organised by the Ministry of Education to celebrate India’s linguistic heritage under the theme “Many Languages, One Emotion.”
- It honoured the legacy of Subramania Bharati, who championed linguistic pride and cultural unity, emphasizing the importance of a pollution free environment in both natural and cultural contexts.
- The event showcased the vibrancy of India’s languages through literary displays, language stalls, and cultural activities, demonstrating a commitment to environmental democracy through linguistic inclusion.
- Ministry of Tribal Affairs actively participated, emphasising the significance of tribal languages in India’s linguistic ecosystem, drawing parallels to the importance of biodiversity in environmental conservation.
- Schools from across the country presented colourful cultural performances, reflecting regional traditions, music, and storytelling practices, highlighting the need for an environmental impact assessment of cultural preservation efforts.
Promotion of Tribal Languages and Digital Innovation
- The Ministry of Tribal Affairs set up a dedicated stall featuring publications in tribal languages from Tribal Research Institutes of Jharkhand, Odisha, and Gujarat.
- A major attraction was the live demonstration of the Adi Vaani App, a digital tool enabling real-time text and speech translation between Hindi/English and various tribal languages.
- The initiative aims to bridge communication gaps, promote linguistic inclusion, and preserve endangered tribal languages through technology, applying the precautionary principle to language conservation.
- The festival provided a platform for tribal communities to showcase their unique linguistic identity and cultural expressions.
- Such initiatives support the National Education Policy (NEP 2020) focus on multilingual education and preservation of indigenous knowledge, similar to efforts in maintaining ecological balance through environmental jurisprudence.

● The Eighth Schedule of the Constitution recognises languages like Hindi, Tamil, Odia, Gujarati, and more.
● Article 350A & 350B ensure facilities for instruction in mother tongue and protect linguistic minorities through dedicated officers, similar to how the Forest Conservation Act protects ecological minorities.
● The NEP 2020 promotes the three-language formula, encouraging education in regional languages to strengthen learning outcomes, akin to promoting sustainable development through environmental impact assessment.
● Celebrations like Bhartiya Bhasha Utsav reinforce cultural unity, national integration, and respect for India’s multilingual identity, contributing to a pollution free environment in terms of cultural expression.
