A new report by IIMAD and the Population Foundation of India (PFI) projects a significant population rise in Lakshadweep and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands by 2051. The study uses innovative logistic curve-fitting methods due to inconsistent demographic data for smaller regions.

Key Population Projections for Island Territories:

• According to the report “Unravelling India’s demographic future (2021-2051)”, both Union Territories are expected to witness modest but steady population growth.
• Lakshadweep’s population is projected to rise by 9.68%, increasing from 67,642 (2016) to 74,194 (2051).
• Andaman & Nicobar Islands will see a 5.73% increase, with population expanding from 3,98,310 to 4,21,135 over the same period.
• The report highlights the islands’ demographic stability despite geographic isolation and limited land resources.
• The projections are part of a broader national demographic exercise covering all States and UTs, offering insights into future socio-economic planning.

Methodology and Gender-Wise Population Trends

• For smaller regions like Lakshadweep and A&N, traditional demographic data such as SRS estimates remain inconsistent or unavailable.
• To address this, researchers used mathematical curve fitting, specifically logistic growth models, to derive realistic projections.
