India Launches Digital Self-Enumeration Portal for Census

The Registrar General of India announced that a dedicated web portal will facilitate self-enumeration for the upcoming Census 2027, marking India’s first digital census. Data will be collected using mobile apps in multiple languages by enumerators and citizens alike.
Key Features of the 2027 Census:
- Census 2027 will be the first digital census in India’s history.
- A special web portal will enable self-enumeration by citizens during both phases.
- Data will be collected using mobile applications in English, Hindi, and various regional languages.
- Enumerators and supervisors will use their own mobile devices for data entry.
Census Phases and Implementation
- The Census 2027 will be conducted in two phases:
- Phase 1: House Listing and Housing Census starting April 2026.
- Phase 2: Population Enumeration to follow in a subsequent phase.
- All States and Union Territories have been instructed to republish the Gazette Notification and appoint Nodal Officers to oversee implementation.
