Why in the news?
- The Centre amended surrogacy rules, permitting the use of donor eggs or sperm for surrogacy.
- Previous restrictions from March 2023, which prohibited donor gametes, were overturned.
- The amendment allows the use of donor gametes if certified by the District Medical Board for couples with medical conditions.

About Surrogacy (Regulation) Act, 2021
- Allows surrogacy for widowed/divorced women (35-45 years) and legally married couples with medical needs.
- Permits only altruistic surrogacy, barring commercial transactions.
- Prohibits commercial surrogacy, punishable by up to 10 years’ imprisonment and fines up to Rs 10 lakhs.
- Requires genetic relation between the surrogate and intended parents.
