Pravasi Bhartiya Diwas 2023
News: The Central government marked the 17th Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas (PBD), also known as the day for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), on January 9 with celebrations in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. The Youth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas was conducted on January 8, 2023, which marked the start of the programme.
Pravasi Bhartiya Diwas
- The annual celebration of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) honors the contribution of the Indian diaspora to the growth of India.
- Every year on January 9th, it is observed to remember Mahatma Gandhi’s return from South Africa in 1915 and his contribution to the campaign for India’s independence.
- The celebration began in 2003 and has continued every year thereafter. It is put on by India’s Ministry of External Affairs, in collaboration with the Confederation of Indian Industry and other organizations.
- PBD offers the global Indian community a platform to interact with the Indian government and people and to share their experiences. It also aids in fostering relationships between India and the Indian diaspora worldwide and in recognising the contributions and accomplishments of Indians living abroad.
- PBD has helped India’s economy expand by luring international investment and encouraging the export of domestic goods and services. By promoting the return of knowledgeable Indian workers and business owners, it has also aided in the creation of jobs and the stimulation of economic activity in India.
Indian Diaspora
- 32 million NRIs and OCIs live outside of India, making up the largest foreign diaspora in the world, according to a Ministry of External Affairs report. The largest yearly migration rate in the world, 2.5 million (25 lakh) Indians go abroad each year.
- Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and Persons of Indian Origin are both part of the Indian diaspora (PIO). These two groups have been crucial in encouraging and making it easier for Indian expatriates to invest in India.
