5th January 2026: Current Affairs Summary

Venezuela Crisis: Capture of President Maduro & U.S. Position

In a dramatic geopolitical development, Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro was captured by United States military forces during a surprise operation in Caracas on 3 January 2026. Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores were flown to the United States and are now in federal custody in New York, where they appeared in a U.S. federal court on narco‑terrorism, drug trafficking, and weapons charges on 5 January and pled pled not guilty

The U.S. government under President Donald Trump has made it clear that it will not take over governing Venezuela, but will instead use oil blockades and economic leverage to push for political change, tempering earlier concerns that it might assume day‑to‑day control. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that the U.S. will not administer the country directly. Meanwhile, Vice President Delcy Rodríguez has been sworn in as interim President by Venezuela’s Supreme Court to ensure continuity of governance amid the transition.

The U.S. operation, widely condemned by some international actors as a violation of international law, resulted in notable casualties, including Venezuelan and Cuban personnel, and has triggered global debate on sovereignty, foreign intervention, and regional stability.

India Becomes World’s Largest Rice Producer

In a significant agricultural milestone, India has overtaken China to become the world’s largest producer of rice, with annual output reaching 150.18 million tonnes for the 2024–25 crop year.

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan highlighted that this achievement reflects sustained growth in agricultural productivity through high‑yielding varieties and robust farming practices. To further enhance yields, the government has released 184 improved crop varieties developed by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), which is expected to benefit farmers and bolster exports.

This development not only strengthens India’s food security but also enhances its global role in staple crop production and international rice trade.

The Indian Coast Guard’s first indigenous Pollution Control Vessel, Samudra Pratap, is set to be commissioned in Goa by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. The commissioning underscores India’s focus on indigenous defence manufacturing and environmental protection in its vast maritime zones.

The train, equipped with hydrogen fuel cell technology, is expected to run on a pilot route in Haryana starting January 2026, with speeds projected between 140–150 km/h.

This initiative signals India’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions in the transport sector while adopting innovative green technologies.

The successful launch also restores SpaceX’s launch cadence after previous scheduling delays.
