WRONG LANDING: SUKHOI FIGHTER JET REMAINS AFTER CRASHING IN NASHIK DISTRICT

Why in the news?

  • An SU-30MKI fighter jet of the Indian Air Force (IAF) crashed in Nashik on June 4.
  • The aircraft had been recently overhauled by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and was on a test sortie from HAL Nashik at Sirsa gaon.

 About Sukhoi Su-30MKI :

  • Twinjet multirole air superiority fighter developed by Russia’s Sukhoi.
  • Built under license by India’s Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the Indian Air Force (IAF).
  • All-weather, long-range, with 3,000 km range and 10-hour flight duration with refuel
  • Variant of the Sukhoi Su-30, heavy, all-weather, long-range fighter.
  • India procured 272 Su-30s from Russia, most assembled by HAL; around 11 jets lost.
  • IAF operates 12 Su-30 squadrons, with 40-50 aircraft undergoing overhaul repairs at HAL.
