WHY ARE FARMERS PROTESTING AGAIN?

Why in the news?

  • On February 13, farmers from various groups began a march towards Delhi as called by Kisan Mazdoor Morcha and Samyukta Kisan Morcha.
  • Primarily from Punjab, farmers initiated a ‘tractor-trolley’ march through Haryana but were stopped at the Haryana-Punjab border.

Highlighting Farmers’ Key Demands:

  • Farmers insist on MSP legislation for all crops, as per the Dr. M S Swaminathan Commission’s advice.
  • Demand for the C2+50% formula, proposed by the commission, accounts for imputed cost and capital returns, ensuring equitable profits.
  • They demand full debt relief for farmers and laborers.
  • Implementation of the 2013 Land Acquisition Act is urged, guaranteeing farmer consent and just compensation.
About Interventions for the benefit of farmers

●      Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) provides Rs. 6000/year to farmers’ families.

●      Pradhan Mantri Kisan MaanDhan Yojana (PM-KMY) offers a pension of Rs. 3000/month to small farmers.

●      Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) ensures crop insurance.

●      Minimum Support Price (MSP) increased to 150% of production cost.

●      Soil Health Cards distributed for rationalized fertilizer use.

●      “Per drop more crop“: Promotes drip/sprinkler irrigation.

●      Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY): Encourages organic farming.

●      e-NAM initiative: Provides an electronic trading platform.

●      Pradhan Mantri Annadata Aay Sanrakshan Abhiyan (PM-AASHA): Ensures remunerative prices.
