Skyroot Aerospace successfully launched Vikram-1, India’s first privately developed orbital launch vehicle, marking a significant milestone in the country’s commercial space programme and its broader Indo-Pacific strategy. The mission strengthens India’s presence in the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) economy and advances the goals of the Indian Space Policy, 2023, while enhancing strategic partnerships in the space domain.

Vikram-1 Launch and Its Significance

  • Vikram-1, developed by Skyroot Aerospace, became India’s first privately developed orbital launch vehicle to place technology demonstration satellites into Low Earth Orbit (LEO), reinforcing India’s Indo-Pacific strategy through enhanced space capabilities.
  • The successful mission makes India one of the few countries with an operational private orbital launch capability, reflecting the rapid growth of the country’s private space ecosystem and contributing to regional economic integration through commercial space services.

Strategic Importance of Low Earth Orbit

  • Low Earth Orbit (LEO) is becoming increasingly important due to the rapid deployment of communication, Earth observation, and surveillance satellites, particularly in the context of strategic competition between major space powers and the evolving Indo-Pacific strategy.
  • Control over preferred orbital shells and radio-frequency spectrum, coordinated by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) through multilateral engagement, has become strategically significant as more countries, including US and China, deploy mega-constellations of satellites in an environment of heightened strategic competition.
  • Indigenous launch capability provides India with greater strategic autonomy, allowing rapid deployment or replacement of satellites during emergencies or national security situations, while strengthening the regional security architecture and enabling closer defense cooperation agreements with partner nations.
  • Experts highlight that LEO assets support intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance (ISR), disaster management, weather forecasting, and secure communications, forming a critical component of regional security cooperation and the broader Indo-Pacific strategy framework, including initiatives under the Quad partnership.

About Low Earth Orbit & Indian Space Reforms :

●  Low Earth Orbit (LEO) extends from approximately 160 km to 2,000 km above the Earth’s surface. Satellites in LEO complete one orbit in about 90–120 minutes, making them ideal for communication, remote sensing, Earth observation, and scientific missions due to lower signal latency, while serving as critical infrastructure for the Indo-Pacific strategy.

●  The Outer Space Treaty, 1967 prohibits any country from claiming sovereignty over outer space, including orbital regions and celestial bodies, while promoting the peaceful use of outer space and upholding the rules-based international order in the space domain.

●  The Indian Space Policy, 2023 promotes greater participation of private companies in satellite manufacturing, launch services, and commercial space activities, with IN-SPACe serving as the nodal regulatory and promotional agency, thereby facilitating strategic partnerships and enhancing India’s position in the global space economy.

●  The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) allocates radio-frequency spectrum and coordinates satellite orbital positions to minimise harmful interference between space systems, serving as a platform for multilateral engagement and international cooperation.
