The Odisha Government has requested the Union Ministry of Culture to support the nomination of the Puri Jagannath Rath Yatra for inscription on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, highlighting its global cultural and spiritual significance.

Odisha’s Proposal for UNESCO Recognition:

  • Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has urged the Union Ministry of Culture to facilitate the nomination of the Puri Jagannath Rath Yatra for inclusion in UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
  • The proposal has been submitted by the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) for examination by UNESCO through the Government of India.
  • The State Government highlighted that the Rath Yatra is not merely a religious festival but a living tradition reflecting India’s cultural diversity, inclusive values, and community participation.
  • The festival showcases India’s rich traditions of:
