Project Himank: Strengthening India’s Infrastructure and Security in Ladakh
Project Himank is an ambitious initiative by the Border Roads Organization (BRO), started in 1985, aimed at improving road communication in the Ladakh region. Often referred to as “Mountain Tamers,” the BRO has been instrumental in building and maintaining roads in one of the most difficult terrains in India.
The primary objective of the project is to enhance connectivity in Ladakh, facilitating better access to remote areas and border posts. Currently, the BRO oversees approximately 2,216.24 km of roads in the region, critical for both national defense and economic development. The project supports military logistics, boosts tourism, and promotes trade, thereby strengthening India’s strategic position in the north.
With its dual focus on security and regional development, Project Himank is a cornerstone in India’s efforts to ensure a secure and prosperous future for Ladakh.
