The National Food Security Act, 2013 provides subsidized foodgrains to approximately two-thirds of India’s population through Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) and Priority Households (PHH) categories, with special focus on pregnant women and lactating mothers. The Act ensures 75% rural and 50% urban coverage with fixed quotas – 35 kg/household/month for AAY and 5 kg/person/month for PHH beneficiaries.
