Marine Protected Areas

News: India will continue to support the establishment of two Marine Protected Areas (MPA) in Antarctica to safeguard marine life and the ecosystem services it provides, according to the Union minister of state for science, technology, and earth sciences.

Oceanic regions are designated as MPAs with the intention of long-term protection.

Along with supporting other ecosystem functions, they help with adaptation and mitigation to climate change.

Individual marine protected areas (MPAs) may differ significantly from one location to another in terms of their specific objectives, governing laws, degree of protection, management strategies, and use rights.

Currently, MPAs encompass 6.35 percent of the ocean. Only slightly more than 1.89% of that area, however, is entirely protected by no-take MPAs, which forbid any fishing, mining, drilling, or other extractive operations.

High Seas Treaty of the United Nations:

It is the first ever treaty to safeguard oceans that are not contained within state borders.

The “Paris Agreement for the Ocean” is another name for it.

It is a binding agreement that safeguards marine life in foreign waters.
