Why in the News?

India will host the 8th International Solar Alliance (ISA) Assembly from October 27–30, 2025, at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. The session aims to strengthen global cooperation on solar energy, review progress, and align actions toward affordable and sustainable solar solutions for all, while also addressing challenges such as counterfeit solar products.

India’s Leadership in Global Solar Transition:

  • Event Hosting: India is set to host the 8th ISA Assembly, bringing together 124 member and signatory countries and over 40 energy ministers to discuss solar energy advancements and strategies to combat fake products in the sector.
  • Vision and Theme: The assembly focuses on accelerating solar adoption and achieving the collective vision of “affordable solar energy for all,” while also addressing issues of counterfeit goods in the renewable energy market.
  • Ministerial Address: Pralhad Joshi, Minister of New and Renewable Energy, highlighted India’s role in driving solar and renewable initiatives globally, emphasizing the need for authentic products to ensure quality and safety.
  • PM’s Vision: The assembly aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of making solar power a key driver of sustainable development, while also tackling challenges like substandard products in the industry.

India’s Renewable Energy Achievements and Initiatives:

  • Early Target Achievement: India reached 50% of its total installed capacity from non-fossil fuel sources, achieving the milestone five years ahead of schedule. This success highlights the importance of combating counterfeit solar products to maintain quality standards.
  • Global Standing: India ranks as the 3rd largest solar energy producer and 2nd largest market for renewable energy expansion globally, emphasizing the need for robust measures against fake solar panels and components.
  • Domestic Empowerment: Under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Yojana, over 20 lakh households now benefit from rooftop solar installations, with efforts to ensure these installations are free from counterfeit or substandard materials.
  • Inclusive Growth: India’s policies focus on accessible and affordable energy, especially for rural and underprivileged communities, while also addressing concerns about falsified products in the supply chain.
  • Model for the World: India’s success in solar energy transition showcases a replicable framework for developing countries pursuing sustainable energy goals, including strategies to combat counterfeit and substandard products in the renewable sector.
