About the Request Denied:
- The 4th Battalion of the 8th Gorkha Rifles sought two pairs of
ivory from the Kerala Forest department for display purposes.
- However, the request was rejected citing the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, which discourages the display of wildlife trophies, including elephant tusks.
- The department emphasised that issuance and possession of such animal articles cannot be encouraged.
About The Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972:
● The Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, safeguards wild animals, plants, and their habitats. ● It regulates trade in wildlife products and lists species under different protection categories. ● Enforced in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh post the Jammu & Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019.
