About Increase in Maximum Residue Limits (MRL):
- FSSAI approved a ten-fold increase in the maximum level of pesticide residue allowed in spices and herbs.
- Default limit for spices raised to 0.1g/kg, compared to the previous 0.01 mg/kg.
- MRL for other food products remains at 0.01 mg/kg.
- In cases where pesticide limits are not defined in Indian or international regulations, Codex Alimentarius Commission standards will be used.
- If not mentioned in Codex, MRL of 0.1 mg/kg will be followed.
- Applicable for pesticides not registered with the Ministry of Agriculture.
What is Pesticide Poisoning?
● Pesticide Poisoning occurs when individuals are exposed to toxic levels of pesticides. ● Pesticides are chemicals or biological substances used to prevent, control, or eliminate pests in agricultural and non-agricultural settings. ● Misuse, overuse, or illegal sale of pesticides can lead to serious health risks for humans and environmental damage.
