Toycathon Initiatives

Q. Explain briefly the Toycathon initiative launched by the government of India and its significance.

Introduction:

It is an event that intends to promote Indian toys in global markets. It is being organized by the ministry of Education with co-ordination from other ministries. An extended effort has been made to manufacture and promote the domestic toys which are economical, eco friendly, affordable and safe to use.

Significance:

Toy industry is on the verge of closure due to lack of demand both globally and locally. It requires revamping. Toycathon is an effort in this way. India is importing toys worth $1.5 billion from China and Taiwan. We can reduce such imports if we can manufacture on our own and supply them. Notably, most of the imported toys are unsafe to use according to Quality council of India. Sustainable management of resource can be achieved through reusing and recycling of materials if such toys are manufactured from wood, bamboo, etc

Conclusion:

Moves like incentivising local manufacturers, handicrafts will make this a success. India needs to come up with programs such as Toycathon to reduce its imports. Rural economies will get a boost from such initiatives. On the other hand government also should work on providing suitable markets for such finished items.
