India Remains the World’s Second-Largest Arms Importer

According to a recent report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), India continues to be the world’s second-largest importer of arms. However, the report also notes a positive shift: India’s arms imports declined by about 4% between the periods 2016–2020 and 2021–2025. This reduction reflects the growing emphasis on indigenous defence manufacturing under the Government of India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. Despite the decline, Russia remains India’s largest arms supplier, though its share in India’s defence imports has gradually reduced as India diversifies its defence procurement sources.

Rising Tensions in the Middle East

Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East remain a key global concern. Reports indicate that the United States is considering the possibility of targeting Kharg Island, Iran’s primary oil export hub, as part of strategic measures to limit Tehran’s oil revenues. Kharg Island handles a significant portion of Iran’s crude exports, and any disruption could have major implications for global energy markets and regional stability.

At the same time, human rights concerns have emerged from the region. Human Rights Watch has accused Israel of using white phosphorus munitions in residential areas of southern Lebanon during clashes with Hezbollah. The use of such munitions in populated areas raises serious concerns about civilian safety and potential violations of international humanitarian law.

Strengthening India–Seychelles Defence Cooperation

India continues to strengthen its defence partnerships in the Indian Ocean region. An Indian Armed Forces contingent is currently participating in the 11th edition of the India–Seychelles joint military exercise “Lamitiye 2026,” being held at the Seychelles Defence Academy from March 9 to March 20. The exercise aims to enhance operational coordination, improve interoperability between the two forces, and reinforce defence cooperation in the strategically important Indian Ocean region.

Government Steps to Secure Domestic LPG Supply

In response to global geopolitical disruptions and concerns about energy security, the Government of India has directed domestic refineries to increase the production of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). The move aims to ensure uninterrupted supply for households and critical sectors such as hospitals and educational institutions. Prioritizing essential consumption reflects the government’s proactive approach to safeguarding domestic energy availability during uncertain global conditions.

Global Oil Prices Decline Amid Optimism Over War Resolution

International oil markets witnessed significant movement as Brent crude prices fell by around 8.5% to approximately $92.5 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) dropped nearly 9% to about $88.6 per barrel. The decline followed remarks by former US President Donald Trump suggesting that ongoing conflict may soon come to an end. The possibility of reduced geopolitical risk helped boost investor sentiment, leading to gains in Asian stock markets such as Japan’s Nikkei 225 and South Korea’s Kospi index.

New Marine Species Recorded in Indian Waters

In an important biodiversity discovery, researchers from Berhampur University have recorded the amphipod species Stenothoe lowryi for the first time in Indian waters. The species was identified along the Arjyapalli coast in Odisha. Previously, this rare shrimp-like marine organism had only been reported from Malaysia. The discovery expands the known geographic distribution of the species and contributes valuable information to marine biodiversity research in the Indian Ocean region.

Discovery of a New Prehistoric Reptile Species

In another significant scientific development, scientists from the University of Washington have identified a new Late Triassic reptile species dating back approximately 225–201 million years. The fossil was discovered in Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona, United States. This discovery provides new insights into the diversity and evolutionary history of early archosaurs, a group of reptiles that eventually gave rise to dinosaurs, crocodiles, and birds.

Conclusion

The events of the last 24 hours reflect the interconnected nature of global developments. Defence modernization, geopolitical tensions, energy security measures, financial market reactions, and scientific discoveries collectively shape the evolving global landscape. Monitoring such developments remains essential for policymakers, researchers, and citizens seeking to understand the rapidly changing dynamics of the modern world.
