India Launches SHANTI Campaign for UNSC Seat

India has formally launched its campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2028–29 term.

The campaign has been introduced under the theme SHANTI — Securing Holistic Advancement through Norms, Trust and Integrity.

India has previously served eight terms on the Security Council and has consistently highlighted its contribution to United Nations peacekeeping operations. The campaign reflects India’s growing demand for greater representation of developing countries in global governance institutions.

MeitY Launches NIDAR 2.0 Drone Innovation Challenge

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has launched NIDAR 2.0 under the SwaYaan initiative.

The programme challenges students to design and develop drones powered by domestically manufactured semiconductor chips. Participants will receive opportunities to compete for prizes worth ₹65 lakh, along with incubation support and internships.

The initiative seeks to promote indigenous drone technology, semiconductor innovation and student-led entrepreneurship under the broader vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.

United Nations Releases First Global Scientific Assessment of AI

The United Nations has released its first-ever scientific assessment of artificial intelligence through a 40-member international expert panel.

The assessment revealed a major concentration of global AI computing capacity. The United States reportedly controls approximately 75 per cent of global AI computing capacity, while China accounts for nearly 15 per cent.

The findings highlight the widening digital divide between technologically advanced countries and developing nations. The report also underlines the need for equitable access to computing infrastructure, data, skills and artificial intelligence technologies.

Ahmedabad Sets Guinness World Record for Tree Plantation

Ahmedabad has entered the Guinness World Records by planting approximately 3.61 lakh saplings within one hour.

The plantation drive was conducted across nearly 76,000 square metres using the Miyawaki urban forest method, which involves planting native species densely to create rapidly growing miniature forests.

The achievement represents an important step towards urban biodiversity restoration, climate resilience and the expansion of green spaces in Indian cities.

Nasha Mukt Yuva Competitions Launched on MY Bharat Platform

The Mera Yuva Bharat platform has launched the Nasha Mukt Yuva competitions for young citizens between the ages of 15 and 29.

The competitions will be organised across five creative categories and will encourage young people to communicate the message of substance-abuse prevention through innovative and artistic forms.

The programme will culminate at the National Youth Summit in August 2026 and forms part of the broader Drug-Free India 2047 mission.

BIS Introduces India’s First Mangrove Restoration Standard

The Bureau of Indian Standards has introduced India’s first dedicated standard for mangrove restoration.

The standard prescribes ecosystem-specific plantation practices, the use of biodegradable materials and the active participation of local communities in conservation projects.

The framework complements the government’s Mangrove Initiative for Shoreline Habitats and Tangible Incomes, commonly known as the MISHTI programme.

The new standard is expected to improve the scientific quality, sustainability and effectiveness of mangrove restoration projects across India’s coastal regions.

ONGC Drills Second Geothermal Well in Ladakh

The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation has drilled Ladakh’s second geothermal well in the Puga Valley.

The well will support the development of India’s first one-megawatt pilot geothermal power plant. Geothermal energy uses heat stored beneath the Earth’s surface to generate electricity and provide direct heating.

The project could provide a reliable source of round-the-clock renewable electricity in India’s high-altitude border regions, where conventional energy infrastructure is often difficult to establish.

Bharat Tex 2026 Begins in New Delhi

Bharat Tex 2026 has commenced at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.

The international textile event is expected to attract around 7,000 overseas buyers, 1.3 lakh trade visitors and exhibitors showcasing more than 20,000 textile and apparel products.

The event provides a platform for manufacturers, exporters, designers, investors and policymakers to explore opportunities across the textile value chain.

Bharat Tex 2026 also showcases India’s growing role as one of the world’s leading textile and apparel producers and exporters.

Ladakh to Establish Hill Development Councils in All Seven Districts

Ladakh is set to establish Autonomous Hill Development Councils across all seven districts of the Union Territory.

At present, such councils operate in Leh and Kargil. The proposed expansion will extend decentralised governance to the five newly created districts.

The move is intended to strengthen grassroots administration, local participation and region-specific development planning in the strategically important Himalayan territory.
