1. U.S.–Saudi Civil Nuclear Agreement: Nuclear Energy Meets Geopolitics

The United States and Saudi Arabia have signed a peaceful nuclear cooperation agreement, opening a new chapter in nuclear diplomacy in West Asia.

Such cooperation is governed by Section 123 of the U.S. Atomic Energy Act, 1954, which requires a formal agreement before significant American nuclear materials, equipment or technology can be transferred to another country for peaceful purposes.

Why Does Saudi Arabia Want Nuclear Energy?

Saudi Arabia views nuclear power as part of its broader economic and energy transformation.

Nuclear energy can help the Kingdom:

  • Diversify its electricity mix beyond hydrocarbons.
  • Reduce domestic consumption of oil and gas.
  • Produce low-carbon and reliable electricity.
  • Support the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030.
  • Develop advanced technological and engineering capabilities.

However, the development also has major geopolitical implications.

Saudi Arabia’s nuclear ambitions cannot be separated from the wider strategic environment involving Iran, Israel, Turkey and other West Asian powers. Particular attention will be paid to whether Saudi Arabia develops sensitive fuel-cycle capabilities such as uranium enrichment and reprocessing.

The key international challenge is balancing a country’s legitimate right to peaceful nuclear technology with the need to prevent nuclear proliferation.

2. DRDO’s AEW&C Mk-II: Strengthening India’s “Eyes in the Sky”

India is taking another major step towards strengthening its airborne surveillance and battle-management capabilities through the Airborne Early Warning and Control – AEW&C Mk-II programme.

DRDO’s Centre for Air Borne Systems (CABS) has signed industry contracts connected with the conversion of six Airbus A321 aircraft and development of mission systems for the programme.

What is an AEW&C System?

An AEW&C aircraft is essentially a flying surveillance and command centre.

It combines:

Airborne Radar + Surveillance + Secure Communications + Battle Management

Operating at high altitude allows such aircraft to detect threats at distances that may be difficult for ground-based radar systems because of terrain and the curvature of the Earth.

AEW&C systems can:

  • Detect and track hostile aircraft.
  • Provide early warning of airborne threats.
  • Guide fighter aircraft towards targets.
  • Coordinate complex air operations.

3. 50% Recruitment Pathway for Ex-Agniveers in CAPFs

The Union Government has created a separate recruitment pathway for ex-Agniveers in Constable (General Duty) positions in Central Armed Police Forces and Rifleman posts in the Assam Rifles.

The framework includes 50% reservation of specified vacancies along with applicable relaxations.

Why is the Decision Important?

The Agnipath Scheme, introduced in 2022, recruits young personnel into the Armed Forces for a four-year period.

A major policy concern has been the employment prospects of Agniveers who are not retained in regular military service after completing their tenure.

CAPFs provide a natural pathway because ex-Agniveers already possess:

4. AAROH: Moving Towards Scientific Mine Closure

The Ministry of Coal has released AAROH – Annual Report on Mine Closure, highlighting India’s increasing focus on scientific closure of coal mines, ecological restoration, rehabilitation and productive reuse of former mining areas.

What is Scientific Mine Closure?

Mining activity does not simply end when mineral extraction stops.
