Cabinet has approved ‘Deep Ocean Mission’. Explain the objectives of this mission with its major components. Also provide your comments on this mission.

Introduction:

Deep Ocean Mission is a part of “Blue Initiative”. It refers to the missions that aim at exploring the ocean for resources and utilizing it for developments. Blue economy is the usage of resources obtained in the oceans for the economic growth, job creation, providing better livelihood, etc. It is about 4% of India’s GDP.

 

Body:

India is covered by ocean in 3 sides. 30% of India’s population is living in the adjoining coastal areas and hence depend on oceans directly or indirectly. Oceans play a major role in the life of these people by facilitating economic growth, tourism, fisheries, aquaculture and blue trade.

In order to maximise the benefits, the union cabinet has approved the deep ocean mission. There are 6 major components of this mission. They are:

It is evident that India is aiming at development through the unconventional resources also. Due to the growth of population and increased resource usage, we need to tap out these resources. But, the technologies should be used in a way that they will not affect the ecological balance. The stakeholders such as local people should also be taken into consideration while devicing such missions. Inclusive growth can be achieved only then.
