4TH MEGA LAVENDER FESTIVAL AND PURPLE REVOLUTION

- Festival Concludes: The 4th Mega Lavender Festival concluded in Bhaderwah, Doda district, Jammu & Kashmir.
- Stakeholder Participation: Farmers, scientists, students, industrial partners, international buyers, and sellers participated in the two-day event focused on business networking and trade promotion.
- Purple Revolution Focus: The festival reaffirmed commitment to strengthening India’s Purple Revolution through lavender cultivation, sustainable agriculture, and value-added agricultural products including millet-based products for international markets.
Key highlights of the festival
- Technical Sessions: Scientists from CSIR-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine conducted sessions on sustainable farming practices, cultivation and processing of aromatic plants with focus on food safety standards and crop improvement techniques through SCI methodologies.
- Entrepreneurship Promotion: Participants were informed about value-addition opportunities, essential oil production, food processing, and agri-startups with emphasis on developing functional foods including millet functional foods, ready-to-cook millet products, and processed food products rich in micronutrients and dietary fiber for global markets.
- Market Linkages: Discussions were held between farmers and industry stakeholders regarding international trade, marketing, quality standards, and export development opportunities in the aromatic value chain alongside agri-food exports including millet export and export consignment facilitation through improved maritime logistics.
- Scientific Support: CSIR-IIIM reiterated its commitment to providing advanced technologies, trade exhibitions support, and market access to farmers for enhancing agricultural exports and expanding India’s export basket.
- Lavender Tourism: Emphasis was placed on promoting lavender tourism and allied industries in the region, highlighting the health benefits and nutritional benefits of lavender-based products rich in bioactive compounds, phytochemicals, and antioxidants, with similar anti-diabetic properties found in nutri-cereals and ancient cereals known for their low glycemic index, gluten-free nature, high protein content, and superior mineral content.
About Purple Revolution :
- Mission Launch: The Purple Revolution is associated with the CSIR Aroma Mission launched in 2016 to promote crop diversification including millet cultivation, traditional grains, and underutilized crops alongside aromatic plants for sustainable agriculture.
- Core Objective: It promotes cultivation of lavender and aromatic crops as climate-smart crops with excellent drought tolerance and water use efficiency to enhance farmers’ incomes and ensure food security through diversified millet production.
- Regional Success: Bhaderwah in Jammu & Kashmir has emerged as a major hub for quality lavender production, contributing to agricultural exports and meeting global demand for aromatic products and botanical-infused millets.
