Andhra Pradesh Launches Massive Seed Ball Green Campaign

Why in the News ?

The Andhra Pradesh government has launched a large-scale seed ball campaign to prepare and distribute 2.5 crore seed balls for increasing green cover, restoring biodiversity, and strengthening climate resilience across the State. This initiative aligns with environmental clearance norms and promotes environmental democracy through community participation in ecological restoration.

Statewide Seed Ball Environmental Initiative

  • The initiative is being led by Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan under the State’s Forest and Environment Department, following environmental jurisprudence principles and the Forest Conservation Act framework.
  • The programme aims to improve forest cover, restore ecological balance, create a pollution free environment, and promote long-term environmental sustainability.
  • Large-scale seed ball preparation activities will be conducted throughout June across different districts of the State, incorporating environmental impact assessment methodologies for optimal site selection.
  • The campaign encourages participation from students, women self-help groups, government employees, NGOs, youth organisations, and environmental volunteers, promoting environmental democracy at the grassroots level.
  • Officials believe the programme will contribute significantly towards creating a greener and more climate-resilient Andhra Pradesh while adhering to environmental clearances and regulatory frameworks.

Distribution Strategy and Ecological Benefits

  • The Forest Department plans to disperse seed balls during the monsoon season in July and August to improve germination success, following the precautionary principle in environmental planning.
  • Three distribution methods have been identified — direct scattering, manual plantation, and aerial dispersal through drone technology, ensuring compliance with EIA notification guidelines.
  • Drone-based distribution will help cover inaccessible forest regions and difficult terrains efficiently, including areas near the coastal regulation zone.
  • The initiative is expected to strengthen biodiversity, improve soil conservation, and support natural regeneration of forests in accordance with environmental jurisprudence principles.
  • Increased green cover can also help mitigate the effects of climate change, including rising temperatures and environmental degradation, embodying the polluter pays principle through proactive restoration.

About Seed Balls and Afforestation Efforts:

Seed balls are small balls made of seeds, soil, compost, and clay that protect seeds until germination conditions become favourable, representing an innovative approach in environmental impact assessment and restoration.

Seed ball technology is widely used in afforestation and ecological restoration programmes, especially in degraded lands, and aligns with the precautionary principle in environmental management.

Afforestation helps improve carbon sequestration, prevent soil erosion, conserve biodiversity, and regulate local climate conditions while supporting the polluter pays principle through environmental restoration.

India’s forest and tree cover is periodically assessed through the India State of Forest Report (ISFR) prepared by the Forest Survey of India, which informs environmental clearances and policy decisions.

Increasing green cover supports India’s commitments under global climate frameworks such as the Paris Agreement and sustainable development goals, strengthening environmental democracy and ecological governance.
