NALSA ORGANISES SECOND NATIONAL LOK ADALAT OF 2026
Why in the News?
- National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) is organising the second National Lok Adalat of 2026 across the country.
- The initiative aims to promote amicable settlement of disputes and reduce the burden on courts through people-centric dispute resolution mechanisms.
Features of the National Lok Adalat
- Nationwide coverage: Conducted across High Courts, District Courts, Tribunals, Consumer Forums, and Permanent Lok Adalats.
- Accessible justice: Ensures speedy, cost-effective, and informal resolution of disputes.
- Types of cases covered: Includes criminal compoundable cases, cheque dishonour disputes, bank recovery matters, disputes related to environmental clearances, violations under the Forest Conservation Act, Coastal Regulation Zone regulations, matters involving environmental impact assessment, and other civil disputes including those requiring ex post facto environmental clearances.
- Voluntary settlement: Cases are resolved through mutual consent and compromise between parties, particularly effective in resolving environmental disputes where the polluter pays principle can be applied through negotiated settlements.
- Large-scale disposal: Between 2023 and 2025, around 26 crore cases were disposed of through 12 National Lok Adalats.
Significance of Lok Adalats
- Reduces judicial backlog: Helps decrease the enormous pendency of cases in Indian courts, including complex matters involving retrospective environmental clearances and EIA notification violations.
- Affordable justice: Provides free legal services and eliminates lengthy litigation expenses.
- Promotes Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR): Encourages settlement outside traditional court procedures, advancing environmental democracy by enabling stakeholders to resolve disputes related to pollution free environment through consensus-based mechanisms.
- Strengthens access to justice: Benefits economically weaker and marginalised sections of society, particularly in environmental matters where the precautionary principle and environmental jurisprudence can be applied through amicable settlements.
- Improves judicial efficiency: Allows regular courts to focus on more serious and complex disputes, including landmark cases like the Vanashakti judgment that have shaped environmental law, while routine matters involving ex-post approvals and post facto clearances are resolved through Lok Adalats.
