India’s 6GHz Spectrum Delay Affects PS5 Pro Launch
Why in the news?
India’s ongoing delay in de-licensing the 6GHz spectrum for Wi-Fi has impacted Sony’s PS5 Pro launch, as the console relies on Wi-Fi 7 technology.
Introduction to India’s 6GHz Spectrum Dilemma:
- In November 2024, Sony released the PlayStation 5 Pro in key global markets but did not announce a launch for India.
- Sony stated that the PS5 Pro will not be available in countries where the 6GHz wireless band (used in Wi-Fi 7) has not been allowed, including India.
Wi-Fi Bands and the 6GHz Debate:
- Wi-Fi primarily uses 4GHz and 5GHz frequency bands.
- In 2021, Wi-Fi 6E introduced the 6GHz spectrum, offering faster speeds up to 6Gbps.
- Several countries, including Japan, U.S., U.K., South Korea, and Mexico, have already allowed the 6GHz spectrum for Wi-Fi use, while India and China have not.
- The 6GHz spectrum is currently reserved for satellite communications in India, primarily controlled by ISRO.
- Telecom operators and tech companies like Google, Meta, and Amazon are pushing for this spectrum to be de-licensed for Wi-Fi use, mirroring the S. model.
Impact on PS5 Pro and Wi-Fi 7 in India:
- Apple and Samsung phones in India also support 6GHz Wi-Fi but are programmed to avoid the spectrum due to regulatory restrictions.
- Sony could follow suit by releasing PS5 Pro consoles in India without 6GHz Wi-Fi support until regulatory clarity is reached.
- Wi-Fi 7 does not require the 6GHz band to function, as it can operate on existing bands more efficiently.
- Wi-Fi 7 routers can still offer faster speeds in India, even without 6GHz support, as local broadband speeds are typically slower than the maximum capabilities of these routers.
